Welcome to the world, little princess!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their second child today. Following royal tradition, the news was announced this morning by the town crier. Cheers of celebration also erupted outside of Buckingham Palace as the birth announcement was posted to the gates there.

Like her big brother Prince George, 21 months, the baby girl was born at St. Mary's Hospital in London. She arrived at 8:34am on Saturday, May 2, weighing 8lbs 3oz.

The baby's gender was reportedly a delivery room surprise for Kate and William, who insisted throughout the pregnancy that they didn't know if their second child would be a boy or a girl - though proud grandpa Prince Charles made his hopes for a granddaughter known many times over.

This of course let to rampant speculation on the part of loyal royal watchers - not to mention some high stakes betting. Shortly before the birth gambling firms were offering odds of 8/15 that baby #2 would indeed be a girl.

A look back at Kate's second pregnancy,..

We don't yet know the the couple's baby name pick, but that news will likely be shared soon. Charlotte and Elizabeth were early favorites for girls, but toward the end of Kate's pregnancy Alice emerged as the likely choice. We'll have to wait and see if that proves to be true!

Just hours old, the little princess is already a pretty big deal: She's the fourth in line to the throne, after her grandfather Prince Charles, dad Prince William and big brother Prince George.

Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - and little Prince George, too - on the wonderful news!
