posted in CelebritiesOnce a year Hollywood's biggest stars gather at the Costume Institute Benefit Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The celebrity-studded event, also known as the Met Ball, marks the opening of the Museum's annual fashion exhibit. It also gives attendees an opportunity to push the fashion envelope to some pretty crazy extremes. It's weird and it's wild and always fun to watch.
If you thought the Golden Globes red carpet can get a little risque, wait until you see what people were wearing at last night's Met Ball.
The official theme of this year's gala was "China: Through The Looking Glass," but looking at celebs like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was something along the lines of "Less is More." Or, maybe, "What the...?"
From Rihanna's overwhelming yellow robe to Katy Perry's graffiti gown, one jaw-dropping, eye-popping look after another was paraded down the red carpet.
Some of our favorite famous moms were right at the forefront of this year's style showdown, ditching their favorite skinny jeans in favor of some much more daring fashion statements.
Here is a look at some of their more memorable looks...
Points for creativity, but I really can't say I love a lot of these outfits.
Jennifer Lopez's is too predictable, Solange Knowles' is too confusing, Sarah Jessica Parker's is... just too much.
Then again, maybe it's me. Maybe too many years spent in yoga pants and Ts has permanently dulled my fashion sense. Maybe I can't recognize the obvious genius in Jennifer Connelly's lacy shoulder pads.
There were a few looks I really did adore, though. Maggie Gyllenhaal's dress looks amazing on her, Jessica Alba looks gorgeous and Ivanka Trump's gown is beautiful, if a bit understated. And can we talk about how absolutely stunning mom-of-three Uma Thurman is in that sultry white dress?
I also love that Katie Holmes went all out, chopping her long locks into a blunt bob to complete her dramatic look. Way to commit, Katie.
The annual Costume Institute Benefit Gala may not showcase any styles that any of us would actually wear - Beyoncé's gown would get me kicked off of the school grounds for sure - but it makes for some pretty entertaining people watching.
So... which dress do you love? And which should have stayed on the rack?
