Miley Cyrus on Hannah Montana and body dysmporphia

Miley Cyrus has quite a lot to say about her years playing pop star Hannah Montana for the Disney Channel, and her words have begun to change how many think of her.

A look at what the 22-year-old singer and former child star had to say to Marie Claire magazine for their latest issue...

Miley Cyrus on Hannah Montana: “From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing.’ Meanwhile, I'm this fragile little girl playing a 16-year-old in a wig and a ton of makeup. It was like Toddlers & Tiaras. I had f***ing flippers.

I was told for so long what a girl is supposed to be from being on that show. I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, Who the f*** am I?"

On the grueling, 12-hour work days: “Every morning, I was getting coffee jammed down my throat to wake me up. I just had to keep going, be tough, be strong. I would have anxiety attacks. I’d get hot flashes, feel like I was about to pass up or throw up. It would happen a lot before shows, and I’d have to cancel. Then the anxiety started coming from anxiety. I would be with my friends, thinking, I should be having so much fun. You get in this hole that seems like you’re never going to be able to get out of."

On her future in Hollywood: "I’m probably never going to be the face of a traditional beauty company unless they want a weed-smoking, liberal-ass freak. But my dream was never to sell lip gloss. My dream is to save the world."

Now I'm well aware Miley Cyrus (pictured center with her younger sister, Noah Cyrus) isn't thought of very highly by a lot of parents, but I have to admit I'm liking this girl more and more as time goes on. Some of her antics are a not my taste, but for the most part when I read what she has to say I agree.

On top of that, everything she just said about being a child star makes total sense to me. Why would we think years of changing the way a child looks wouldn't have a lasting effect on them? I won't go so far as to say all young actors should quit their roles, but in playing pop star Hannah Montana, I can see being morphed into what was thought of as the epitome of teen prettiness could make a person's regular self pale in comparison.

I'm not in a rush to have my 10 and 9-year-old boys watch Miley's videos (or Hannah Montana for that matter), but there are certain things this young woman has said that I'd be happy to have them take in. Despite what she's been through I believe this girl has a great head on her shoulders, and I'll be rooting for her.
