posted in CelebritiesIt's safe to say Ryan Reynolds absolutely loves being a new dad, even if he's struggling a bit to wrap his mind around all that parenthood means.
"You suddenly feel the inexorable amount of time go by," the actor, who is dad to daughter James with wife Blake Lively, recently told AOL while talking about what's changed.
"There's nothing that ages you faster than having a kid, and that's not because you wake up in the middle of the night every five seconds because someone's got to shit themselves—it's really because you're looking at this person and time is just flying by, like how is it possible that you're already half a year old?"
The first-time-father continued, "And when most people are given at best 90 of these years on this planet, you start to look at it like that, it freaks you out a little bit. You start to make the most of the time you have with this person."
With that perspective in mind, Ryan Reynolds is putting time with his family as his first priority.
Speaking of the perks of his career choice he went on to sweetly explain, "We have long hours but we also get breaks, and unlike most people who get one week off a year, I might have three months off which is so nice, those three months used to drive me insane when I was a young buck, single, and carefree, but now I just want to be with my daughter so yeah. I'll do anything to be with my wife and baby."
Wouldn't it be grand if all parents could work on such a schedule? I imagine alternating lengthy periods at home with trips away to indulge your creative side would be the best of both worlds (or at the very least beat trying to fit everything in to each individual day).
That aside, I'm finally at a place where I can empathize with what "freaks" him out. For a long time, when I was at home with our two little boys, the passing of time seemed obnoxiously slow to me. I had a hard time adjusting to full-time motherhood, and the early months drug on rather then flew by in a flash. However, once my kids both entered school time got funny.
These days the weeks and months pass by at warp speed, and I'm often shocked to realize it's time yet again to turn a page on the calendar. There are still moments (particularly in that late afternoon/pre-dinner witching hour) when time can't move fast enough, but overall life is speeding by. What's that saying that's something like the days are long but the years are short? That sums it up perfectly in my experience.
How does time feel to you? Has it changed over the years?
