Why Kristin Cavallari uses homemade goat milk formula

If you've ever suspected Kristin Cavallari is a bit "psycho" about healthy eating you're not alone, as the mother of three even uses the word to describe herself.

In her new book, Balancing in Heels, the former reality star opens up about feeding her three children with husband Jay Cutler by writing, "Once I stopped breastfeeding each kid and we ran out of stock of my frozen breast milk, we put them on a homemade goat milk formula (both grew out of their dairy sensitivity by then)."

Why not regular formula or the soy option grocery stores sell? Kristin elaborates:

"I’m not a fan of of soy (it’s usually genetically modified; more about that later), and both Cam and Jax have sensitivities to cow’s milk — and unfortunately, soy and cow’s milk are the only two options for store-bought formula available right now. Goat’s milk is the closest thing out there to human breast milk. Plus, it is more easily digested than cow’s or soy milk. Giving goat’s milk to children is popular in Europe and other parts of the world. Goat’s milk is not enough, though, so Jay and I, along with our pediatrician, came up with a formula recipe for our kids."

The 29-year-old, who welcomed daughter Saylor 4 months ago, explains her strong feelings against GMOs by explaining she’s "become a psycho about reading every single ingredient label" and researching the ingredients she doesn't recognize."

"GMOs are linked to digestive problems, among other things," Kristin Cavallari goes on to write. "Antibiotics and growth hormone are other additives being excessively pumped into the animals we are eating, which means we’re then consuming these excess antibiotics and hormones. And some processed foods actually contain toxic chemicals, often used to prevent spoilage and enhance flavor. I truly believe that everything I need to flourish nutritionally is found in nature and that some stuff just shouldn’t be messed with, especially the food I’m putting in my body."

You may recall it was in 2013 that a mother in Maine was threatened with having her baby taken away for making her own goat's milk formula. While many of our own commenters suspected there was more to the story than was being reported, the baby was taken for a mandatory overnight hospital stay and fed store-bought formula. After the boy was returned home the state continued to keep an eye on the family.

I have to wonder what the big difference is between the mom in Maine making her own formula and a reality star choosing to do so that's getting one in trouble and not the other.

Of course, Kristin is getting quite the reaction from commenters far and wide.

"Using homemade formula is extremely irresponsible and dangerous," one person wrote on People's article. "I’m glad she worked with her pediatrician, who was hopefully trained on the subject, but I highly doubt it. Serious complications, including malnutrition, dehydration and even death could have occurred.

Another jabbed, "I am not going to take health advice grom a 'psycho' anti-vaxxer."

Personally, I'm glad to hear Kristin had her doctor's help in creating the concoction, because I am a bit wary of the idea of homemade formula. I'm sure it's entirely possible to do correctly if you have the knowledge, but I fear most of us have no clue.

What's your take on homemade formula? Are you particular about what your family eats?
