Expectant parents Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend revealed in December that the baby on the way is a little girl, but it turns out the big news didn't come as a surprise.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the model mom-to-be, who conceived via in vitro fertilization, reveals that she specifically chose a female embryo.

“I’ve made this decision. Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.'" she reveals. “I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. It excited me to see... just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond."

It didn't take long for the online backlash to begin, with some criticizing the couple for, in the words of one online commenter, “messing with the natural blessing from God.”

Chrissy seems genuinely surprised by all of the criticism, but as always the outspoken celebrity has been quick to fire back, taking to Twitter to respond, "My natural blessing from god was infertility."

That's not all she had to say.

"What year is this!? And for the record, I am always happy and open to speak on infertility. The more casual, the better! I don't mind," she Tweeted. When someone remarked that it was "sad" that they would prefer one gender over another, Chrissy replied, "what is that difference though? I've already created embryos with a doctor. only after must it be random?"

My personal favorite of Chrissy's Tweets, though, was this one: "I also picked the embryo with a taste for bacon, a knack for magic and size 7 feet so she can always find shoes."

At least her sense of humor is still intact.

It's an interesting debate. While the traditional side of me leans toward letting nature run its course, I can certainly see Chrissy's point. She had to intervene with the so-called "natural" process just to get pregnant after trying for years to conceive without luck. That meant she had an opportunity to decide on a boy or a girl, so she went ahead and did just that.

Trying for one gender over another is nothing new. Women attempt to time conception to certain points in their cycles and try out old wives tales for that very reason. Heck, there's even an app for it. Chrissy took it one step further to guarantee a girl, but is it really that much different?

In any case, she's quick to point out that just because they chose a girl this time doesn't mean they've ruled out a baby boy all together.

"A boy will come along. We'll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick," she says, noting that they have "a few more [embryos] on ice."
