The 88th Academy Awards are just a few days away, so it's no surprise that Oscar-worthy speculation has officially reached a fever pitch.
Unfortunately, I don't get to many movies these days, and it's hard to make predictions when you've only seen a handful of the nominees (and all of those are from the Animated Feature Film category).
That doesn't mean we have to miss out on the fun, though. BabyCenter's experts have come up with another very slightly scientific method of predicting the night's big winners: Baby names, of course!
Let's consider two of the top categories: Actor in a Leading Role and Actress in a Leading Role.
Here's who is up for the top prize for the men:
- Bryan Cranston (Trumbo)
- Matt Damon (The Martian)
- Leonardo Dicaprio (The Revenant)
- Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs)
- Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)
After taking the Golden Globe for his role, Leo has been getting a lot of Oscar buzz. And no doubt Matt's four daughters would love him to bring home the prize. If BabyCenter's baby name database is any indication, though, those two may be out of luck. When it comes to popularity, Michael is stomping out all of the competition, coming in at #15 this past year.
As for the women, here are the top contenders:
- Cate Blanchett (Carol)
- Brie Larson (Room)
- Jennifer Lawrence (Joy)
- Charlotte Rampling (45 Years)
- Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
Cate may be a classic, and Brie is certainly an up-and-comer, but it could be Charlotte who comes out on top. Thanks to a royal boost, the name landed in the top 10 in 2015.
We'll have to see if this (potentially) groundbreaking theory holds true, but if it does we could see the always wonderful Rachel McAdams named Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in Spotlight (sorry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rooney Mara, Alicia Vikander and Kate Winslet). And The Big Short's Christian Bale could just beat out his fellow Actor in a Supporting Role nominees, Tom Hardy, Mark Ruffalo, Mark Rylance and Sylvester Stallone.
....
Sorry, I got a little distracted by the mere mention of Mark Ruffalo. Sigh.
Best of luck to all of this year's Oscar nominees... will you be watching on Monday evening?
