Gwyneth Paltrow is comfortable with letting her daughter, Apple Martin, experiment with makeup in their home, but she's at a loss on when her little girl ought to be allowed to wear it outside the house.

Speaking to Yahoo! Beauty the actress opened up about trying to teach her 11-year-old about self-image by sharing, "I just hope that my daughter always feels beautiful. And I think that absolutely comes from the way you regard yourself and hold yourself. I think there’s [sic] so many women who might not be classically beautiful but who just are so beautiful—they’re so alluring because you can just tell they’re so into themselves, you know, in a good way. So I hope she has that quality."

Gwyneth Paltrow, who is pictured here with her own mother, actress Blythe Danner, went on to share, "I was never into makeup and beauty in my 20s. My daughter is the exact opposite of me—she’s basically a fledgling makeup artist. She watches YouTube and all that and loves makeup, which is another reason I’m so happy that this line is going to come out because she likes to play with makeup and I prefer it to be nontoxic."

“I let my daughter wear makeup around the house, because she really loves it, but she also does special-effects makeup and she loves to experiment and she’ll do really wild things or she’ll, like, do some Snapchat person with rainbows down the face. I don’t even know what that is; you’re apparently even too old to know what that is. Sometimes like if we’re going to a party she’ll put on some mascara and then take it off so there’s like a hint. So she’s allowed to do that, but she’s a bit young for, you know, a full face.”

Upon being asked when Apple will be allowed to wear makeup out of the house the 43-year-old explained, "I’m not sure what the appropriate makeup age is, probably, I don’t know, 14? Is that too old? Too young? I’ll have to do research I think."

Being that I don't have girls (and neither of my boys has shown any interest in wearing makeup), I'm completely thrown by by Gwyneth's questions. The age-appropriateness of makeup isn't something I've thought about in years, and I'm as stumped as she is by what's a good age.

I'm tempted to say 15, because in my mind that's a time between being too young and not yet a full-fledged driving/working teenager, but if I think back I bet I started wearing a bit of eyeliner to school closer to 13. There was something about starting middle school (which was grades 7, 8 and 9 where I lived) that made me feel like it was time.

It's possible I'd like the answer to be 15, but somewhere in the 13-14 range is probably more realistic.

When did you first start wearing makeup? What age would you advise is best for girls who are interested to start wearing makeup outside the home?
