posted in CelebritiesThe price attached to fame has cost Ryan Reynolds a longtime friend. In the latest issue of GQ the actor, who is raising 9-month-old daughter James with wife Blake Lively, opens up about being betrayed and how their doing so far going without a nanny.
Ryan Reynolds on losing a friend: "A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around. I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks… It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out."
On the friend's motive: "Just for money. I mean, I don’t think he thought he would ever be caught. But it’s a pretty narrow group of people that I would send photos like that to. They’re just, like, my closest family and my closest friends: ‘Here’s us in the delivery room!’… It was, like, so kind of shocking. There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out."
His best parenting advice: "You just try to not be a complete pile of s–t and just be there for them. You know, I like it: I mean that in the heaviest context. I genuinely like it. I like being a father. I like having a daughter. I would like to have more kids. You know, it seems to suit me pretty well."
On being a dad: "I have no problem waking up five times in the middle of the night and changing diapers, and as exhausted as you get, I have this stupid grin on my face all the time. And that’s not because I have a nanny or something like that. It’s just us right now, and I love it…I’m surprised how patient I am with it. I feel like I could sometimes have a bit of a short fuse, but there’s just been this weirdly endless supply of patience."
While it's great to hear Ryan Reynolds has no issue with losing sleep, he has a bone to pick with taking his little girl's temperature. Before we get to the seriousness of the photo issue, have a chuckle at this bit of new parent freakout.
In a separate interview the actor opened up about James running a fever, explaining during Live with Kelly and Michael, "She didn't sleep last night, first fever...I needed to check her temperature through the rectum, which for me was just so traumatizing.
"I was like, 'No, it can't be! There's a mouth, there's an armpit, there's got to be something.' The doctor was like, 'No, no, no, just have one of you guys distract her and then do it, she'll be fine...'
"You can't distract her from that! I warmed [the thermometer] up and everything... And so I did that. It was terrifying though. It all went well, I didn't lose it, it came back out. You just can't help but think that this is gonna leave a lasting mark...! They've gotta come up with a better system, seriously."
I have to say, this is not a been-there, done-that circumstance for me. We always just put the thermometer in our kid's armpit! (Check out more on how to take baby's temperature here.)
Jokes aside, my heart goes out to Ryan and Blake over the issue of the friend trying to sell James' photos. I know there are a million perks to having a million dollars and fame to go along with it, but losing track of who you can actually trust has to be painful.
