Alyssa Milano's mommy moment is hilarious and horrible

by

Carolyn Robertson

posted in Celebrities

Have you ever had a bad mom day? I mean an unbelievably awful day, the kind of day where absolutely everything goes wrong and all you can do is count down the seconds until bedtime?

Welcome to the club. And I'd like to welcome a famous mom to our ranks, too: Alyssa Milano.

The actress and mom-of-two took to Facebook yesterday to vent about a trip she was taking with her 4-year-old son Milo, and it was horrible and hilarious in equal measure.

On a flight for a wedding. Milo just threw up all over me. When I saw in his face it was coming I cupped my hands to try to catch it. Not sure why I thought that would work. Did not work. But the visual of me sitting there horrified trying to catch his vomit with my cupped hands is still making me giggle.

Then I obviously had to change him. As I was changing him I had a milk let down (because the female body is perfect and sensed his discomfort) and I was like, "no, no, no, boobs, wrong kid."

I then had to pump. (Elizabella is home with Mammie and Papa. Lucky girl.)

So, all in all, we were in the air for 40 minutes and I spent 35 of those minutes in the lavatory cleaning up vomit and pumping breast milk. If anyone went over me with a black light right now they'd be horrified.

And it gets better! Our connection flight is cancelled! Just got that email. I'm still in the air. Yay! And Milo wants bacon. He doesn't understand that he can't order his food "from the waiter," better known as the flight attendant. He really, really wants bacon. Is it too early for me to start drinking?

#‎bacon‬ ‪#‎vomit‬ ‪#‎needvodka‬

Bacon! I love it. Because of course your kid is going to demand bacon on a plane shortly after throwing up. Of course he is.

Truth time: Who out there has done exactly what Alyssa did when poor Milo vomited? Who else has cupped their hands together to try to catch the puke? It seems to be the maternal instinct kicking into overdrive. I've done a lot of gross things as a mom, but that one still ranks right up near the top of the list.

We're so used to seeing celebrities looking perfectly put together and utterly in control. It's always sort of refreshing to hear that even they have times when everything just falls apart. Even they can't avoid those catch-the-puke days.

Have you had a day like Alyssa's?

Say it isn't so! Ben Affleck reportedly dating his kids' nanny

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Is Ben Affleck dating his kids' nanny after splitting from wife Jennifer Garner? Us Weekly would like you to believe so, and claims to have the inside scoop on the scandal.

Publishing the headline "Ben Affleck Has Been Dating Nanny Christine Ouzounian" on Wednesday, the celebrity news outlet cites a friend of the young woman as their source of information. Reportedly, Christine was hired through a high-end Beverly Hills nanny agency began caring for Violet, Seraphina and Samuel this past spring when the famous couple were in the midst of a secret 10-month trial separation.

“They would hang out without the kids,” the so-called friend of Christine explained. “And they were very flirty.”

From there Us Weekly claims Jennifer caught on to what was going on and let the nanny go, but she and Ben continue to spend time together.

“She says Ben really, really likes her,” the friend added. “She’s saying this is true love.”

Ben Affleck nanny rumors

Ben Affleck is fighting mad over the reports, and is threatening a lawsuit over the article.

Us Weekly notes that a rep for the star told them "all allegations of a romantic relationship are baseless and untrue," while New York Post's Page Six received this lengthier statement:

"The story is complete garbage and full of lies. You shouldn't be able to hide behind 'blind sources' and attempt to destroy families going through a difficult time. The tabloid [Us Weekly] decided to construct stories in order to sell magazines. It's like story time in kindergarten. It's shameful and desperate."

I was skeptical of the claims right from the start -- but then again, this kind of thing isn't unheard of. A short list of examples of famous men who've hooked up with the kids' nanny include Jon Gosselin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jude Law, Ethan Hawke and Mick Jagger.

All these cases make me think twice and consider that there is some truth to the story, but it just seems so ridiculously easy for a publication to falsify this type of claim. Because other men have done it the public is more ready to accept the unmanned source's word -- and shame on them (and us) for falling so easily for it.

On the other hand, would Us Weekly have published the story if they didn't believe it were really true? It should be no surprise someone with his bank account has the power to sue. Still, if he is innocent my heart goes out to him. I can't imagine what it would be like to be falsely accused in such a large way.

All I know for sure is these reports are bad news for the entire Garner-Affleck family. Here's hoping their three kids are kept away from the news headlines right now, but odds are they're going to see the reports -- no matter if they're true or false -- someday.

Lies or likely true? What do you make of the 'Ben Affleck is dating the nanny' story? Weigh in with a comment below.

How Kate Winslet is breaking the cycle of negative body image

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Thinking back, Kate Winslet can't recall hearing the women in her life say anything positive about their own bodies.

The actress, who is mom to three, got into the subject of body image while on Monday night's episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls.

"When I grew up, I never heard positive reinforcement about body image from any female in my life," the woman who disapproves of the post-baby body obsession shared. "I only heard negatives. That's very damaging, because then you're programmed as a young woman to immediately scrutinise yourself and how you look."

Kate Winslet daughter Mia

Kate Winslet is making a conscious effort to do things differently with her kids, starting with watching how she talks about herself in front of 14-year-old daughter Mia.

The star explained, "I stand in front of the mirror and say to Mia, 'We are so lucky we have a shape. We're so lucky we're curvy. We're so lucky we've got good bums.' And she'll say, 'Mummy, I know, thank God.'"

Although I'm confident my mother had the best of intentions, my memories of hearing comments as a kid fall in line with Kate's experience. Specifically, there was one infamous instance in which my mom said something about how she was fat and I, truly believing I was being helpful, assured her, "But you're skinny from the knees down!"

My bad.

People don't talk as often about boys and body image, but it's on my mind as the mother of two young guys. I do make an effort to choose my words carefully, but err on the side of not talking about weight at all. I'll say something about how strong my arms or legs feel after a workout, but (especially since I am overweight) I tend not to comment positive or negative about the parts of me I'd like to change.

Here's hoping that's at least a little better than being negative.

Coco Austin is pregnant! Has had baby's name picked out for years

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Fourteen years after tying the knot, Ice-T and Coco Austin are on their way to welcoming their first child together.

The model/television personality announced the big news Monday while talking about their upcoming chat show, writing on Twitter: "I'm pregnant!!! Yah!! Ice & I are so excited! I announced it Friday on our new talkshow which airs Aug 3rd."

The baby will be the first for Coco, who is 36, and the third for 57-year-old Ice-T. Not only does he have two children from previous relationships, he has grandchildren -- including one who's already 20!

Ice-T Coco baby

The mom-to-be previously opened up about her desire to have children by sharing, "I don't want to be like those 80-year-old women with no one around them. I want to have something I gave birth to early in life and be like, 'You can help me out now!'"

"I want a little girl!" Coco Austin told In Touch Weekly in 2013. "We already have the name — Chanel. I want her to be a lawyer!"

"I want a little doll of my own!” she added. “I could teach her to walk in heels and do her hair."

No word yet on if Ice-T and Coco are expecting a boy or girl, or the star's due date.

In a way I envy those who have their kids' names picked out years ahead of time, because the process of choosing one while pregnant was not easy for me. I kept wanting to have an "Aha! That's it!" moment, like a lightbulb going off that I'd found the perfect name, but in reality it was a process of eliminating the names that we liked least and seeing what was left.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine the kind of people who have their kids' names chosen well before even getting pregnant have more an absolutely-sure-that-name0-is-perfect feeling.

Did you have your child's name picked out ahead of time? Is that what they ended up being called? Share with us in a comment below!

Uma Thurman knows for certain Maya wasn't switched at birth

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

People are starting to take notice of just how much Uma Thurman's daughter Maya looks like her. Recently the 16-year-old, whose father is Ethan Hawke, stepped out in front of the cameras at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York.

Take a look at the two side-by-side:

Uma Thurman daughter Maya

“I’m madly in love with all of my children and very proud of them,” the actress, who is also mom to 13-year-old son Levon Roan and 3-year-old daughter Luna, told People. “I think they conduct themselves with a lot of dignity and respect for others. It’s all a parent could dream of.”

Uma Thurman briefly commented on her lookalike daughter in a way that got me thinking. When their strong resemblance was pointed out she explained, "Well, she never left the room at the hospital, so they didn’t switch her!"

For a moment I thought I could say the same about my kids -- but come to think of it, our firstborn did spend a few hours in the nursery. I had almost completely forgotten about it! After a very long labor he was born at 3:30 in the morning, and a few hours later the nurse offered to take him so I could get some rest. I was so desperate for sleep (and still fighting the fever I had developed) that I agreed.

At the time, it didn't even occur to me to be worried about him being misidentified. I'd heard of various 'switched at birth' stories over the years, but it didn't even cross my mind. I did feel some guilt about having him away from us, but that was the extent of my concerns.

Gwyneth Paltrow wants you to start peeing in the shower

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Gwyneth Paltrow has the cure for what ails your postpartum pelvic muscles, though your housemates may not particularly care for her latest advice.

One of the Goop creator's latest posts offers up suggestions for how to tone up the group of muscles that attach to the bones at the bottom of your pelvis. Particularly after having a baby things can end up out of whack, which leads to some women experiencing peeing when they sneeze, run, jump or laugh (also known as urinary incontinence).

"Try peeing in the shower squatting down," the site instructs. "When you squat to pee as opposed to sitting up straight on the toilet, you automatically engage your pelvic floor and it naturally stretches and tones."

Gwyneth Paltrow Goop advice

It goes on to say, "Having sex is not only fun, but it's great for your body, mind, spirit, and pelvic floor - and it helps you exist in the moment. Sex chemically elevates mood and reduces depression, and orgasms trigger a rush of endorphins and human growth hormones, while also reducing cortisol levels. Practice squeezes and letting go...your partner will love it!"

While it's not entirely clear if Gwyneth Paltrow wrote this latest Goop article or another person did, the actress is no stranger to offering up advice about how women should care for themselves. For example, one previous post recommended steam cleaning your vagina.

Is this celebrity mom of two on to something? I have to say I'm one of the lucky ones who isn't dealing with this particular issue, but many of my fellow bloggers are. I got the stretch marks pretty good, so don't go thinking I lucked out entirely, but I am thankful this isn't also something I'm dealing with.

This one thing about having kids drives Nicole Richie "insane"

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Although Nicole Richie's designer handbags undoubtedly cost a pretty penny more than my thrift-store-scavenged treasures, what's inside our purses doesn't differ all that much.

Opening up about being mom to 7-year-old Harlow and 5-year-old Sparrow, the star recently shared, "Because I have kids, I [carry] a whole emergency kit. I have Band-Aids, Wet Ones, Aquaphor, and cranberry almond Kind bars.''

The wife of Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden added, "My kids look at my bag as their own, which drives me insane! My son hides Legos in there, and sometimes I'll find a sock.''

Nicole Richie kids

When asked if there will be another little one joining the family someday down the road, Nicole Richie told E! News, "I am not planning on any more, but you never know. I don’t wanna say I don’t want them and then they come and I feel bad.”

For the most part, my purse is my own these days. With kids ages 10 and 9, who are away at school most days of the year, I try and keep things to the bare minimum: wallet, keys, a pen and chapstick. I'm never without the chapstick. But in the summer months old habits start to creep in.

At this very moment I'm toting around two pairs of kid socks (wearing sandals and no socks to the roller skating rink just won't do), granola bars (if you think toddlers are bad about getting 'hangry' wait until they're tweens), nearly-overdue library books and a water bottle. The water bottle that is mine, but somehow becomes community property as soon as we leave the house.

It's funny, my Grandma once commented on my carrying snacks and water all about during one of her visits, saying something to the effect of, "Why can't they just wait?" I hadn't really thought about it, as silly as that sounds. I think in her mothering years kids just had to be patient, but for us trying to always be prepared is the norm.

What kid stuff is in your purse right now? Tell us in a comment below!

Kim Kardashian is touting a miracle morning sickness cure

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Kim Kardashian has taken to her ultra-sized Instagram account to spread word of a cure for morning sickness. Forget ginger chews, small frequent meals and herbal tea -- this is likely one you've never heard of before.

Posting a picture of herself holding a bottle of medicine labeled Diclegis the expecting star wrote:

"OMG. Have you heard about this? As you guys know my #morningsickness has been pretty bad. I tried changing things about my lifestyle, like my diet, but nothing helped, so I talked to my doctor. He prescribed me #Diclegis, I felt a lot better and most importantly, it's been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby. I'm so excited and happy with my results that I'm partnering with Duchesnay USA to raise awareness about treating morning sickness.

If you have morning sickness, be safe and sure to ask your doctor about the pill with the pregnant woman on it and find out more www.diclegis.com; www.DiclegisImportantSafetyInfo.com"

Kim Kardashian Instagram

Say what now? I've never heard of Diclegis, so I did a little poking around this morning.

As with most prescription drugs the list of warnings is a mile long, but Diclegis' website states it "is the only FDA-approved prescription medicine for Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVP), which is commonly called morning sickness." While it hasn't yet been studied with women with suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, comments by some on Kim's post attest to the drug's effectiveness.

Hopping over the the BabyCenter Expert Advice page, I was interested to read this mention of Diclegis:

Antihistamines have also been used to treat nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Your practitioner may recommend doxylamine, an antihistamine that's available as a sleeping pill under the brand name Unisom Nighttime Sleep-Aid. (Don't confuse Unisom Nighttime Sleep-Aid with Maximum Strength Unisom SleepGels – they're two different things.) One caution: Doxylamine can make you sleepy, so don't drive when taking it.

Vitamin B6 and doxylamine have often been used in combination to treat morning sickness. In fact, the FDA has approved this combination for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy under the brand-name Diclegis.

Despite being pretty far into her second pregnancy, it seems Kim Kardashian is still dealing with some nausea. In late June she vented on Twitter, "Wait wait wait I thought this nausea thing was supposed to be gone by now!!!! UGHHHHHH."

I was fortunate to have only mild morning sickness during my two pregnancies. The nausea was annoying for the entire first trimester, but it wasn't anything I couldn't get through with some of the natural remedies. Still, my heart goes out to anyone who has had it intensely, and especially those going through hyperemesis gravidarum. Here's hoping this medicine may some day be approved to treat that as well!

Would you be willing to give this morning sickness treatment a try? (Tell us in a comment below why or why not.)

Not everyone is thrilled by Stacy Keibler's birth story

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Celebrities

Stacy Keibler is quite proud of having delivered her daughter in a drug-free home birth, but not everyone is up for hearing about it.

In an interview with Ricki Lake for The Business of Being Born, the ex-girlfriend of George Clooney shared of Ava's arrival, "I felt like we went to war together. I kept saying, ‘Ava’s a warrior. I’m a warrior.’ It was one of my mantras that I would say. Then when she came out, I feel like we had this bond that we had just fought together."

Explaining the impact the film had on her and husband Jared Pobre's line of thinking, Stacy Keibler added, "Watching The Business of Being Born changed everything for my husband and I. We really wanted to research midwives and wanted to learn as much as we could about doing things more naturally.”

“If I had to go to the hospital, they pretty much couldn’t do anything unless it was an emergency situation,” she added of her two-page birth plan. “I just want to help educate other women out there because there’s so many choices I didn’t realize I could make.”

Stacy Keibler baby

While comments on People magazine's story about Stacy Keibler's birth were generally positive, reaction to their tweet of the article was mixed. Take a look at a few of the comments the new mom received:

Just one year ago we asked readers if they felt it was bragging to mention you had a natural birth, and the topic generated a lot of conversation. While many feel all births are something to be proud of, this comment stuck by Jeanine out to me:

"Women who are unhappy or feel guilty about how they gave birth will feel that someone is bragging even when they are not. For some reason they get offended that another mom dares to be happy with her birth experience."

Do you think that's what is really happening here? It's hard to tell from just a small tweet where these commenters are coming from, but something sure seems to be rubbing people the wrong way about this birth story.

Why do you think Stacy Keibler's birth story was met with not-so-nice comments?
