"Scary, helpless, beautiful:" 13 celebrity dads describe childbirth

We often hear about childbirth from a new mom's perspective: The pain, the anticipation, the joy. (Did I mention the pain?) While there is of course no comparing the two, there's no doubt that the experience can be pretty mind-blowing for dad, as well.

Gone are the days when the expectant father would pace the hospital hallways just waiting to light up that celebratory cigar. The modern dad is right there in the delivery room, coaching, encouraging and - despite the plan to stay "waist up" - even holding up a leg during the final agonizing push.

Oh, and DJ'ing, too. After all, who could forget dad-of-three Matthew McConaughey's epic description of his wife Camila Alves' 60-hour labor and delivery? Ouch!

"I sat there with her, right between her legs," he revealed shortly after the birth of their son Levi. "We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music. We were jamming! She was sweating. No painkiller, let’s go."

The Oscar-winner isn't the only famous father who has gotten totally honest about childbirth. "Scary," "pukey," and "amazing" are just a few of the words they've used to describe what it was like to watch their babies being born.

Take a look...

These reactions seem so genuine - I think my own husband would use some of the very same words to describe what it felt like for him to watch our daughters be born, not mention what it was like to watch me go through it all. Delivering my babies made me realize how capable I really am, and I think it made him realize it, too.

As for c-section deliveries, it seems those may come as the biggest shock of all for dads. By the time we step foot in the delivery room ourselves, most of us have heard descriptions of vaginal birth, or even seen it all unfold on a well-meaning friend's home video. We know it's going to be messy and intense, we know, generally, what to expect.

A c-section, though, often remains a bit of a mystery. Like Dax Shepard, I'm sure there are many dads who weren't prepared to see their loved one's internal organs on display when they peeked over the surgical curtain!

How did your partner feel about childbirth?
