posted in CelebritiesDavid Beckham is a total softie when it comes to his only daughter, 4-year-old Harper, but has put his foot down on one particular subject: her hair. The retired soccer star, who has three sons and one daughter with wife Victoria Beckham, recently shared she's never had a haircut!
Speaking with Yahoo Style he explained, "About a year ago, my wife said, 'Maybe we should cut Harper's hair.' And I was like, 'No! We need to grow it. Do. Not. Touch.'"
"Since she was born, we haven't cut it," he added. "That's why it's pretty much down to her knees...[It's] just so good, isn't it?"
He's willing to take a razor to Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo's heads, however.
The man whose mother is a hairdresser shared, "I do cut my sons' hair from time to time. When they have a buzz cut, I do it. If I have to use scissors, the boys know not to ask – [my mum] never taught me how to do that."
"I have no power with that little girl — no power whatsoever," David Beckham also recently told Entertainment Tonight. "I love all my children, of course, equally," he added, "but I'm definitely stricter with the boys than I am Harper, which gets me in trouble with my wife of course."
Is it safe to assume then, if Harper has the ability to get what she wants, that she doesn't mind having her hair long? Because that's my only concern with her father's firm stance on not allowing it to be cut.
Maybe it's because I only have sons, but I just don't get the interest in never cutting a child's hair. Maybe for the first year or two I can understand, but at some point a little trim (or a big chop) goes a long way to keep things neat.
Years ago I knew a mom who had never cut her school-aged kids' hair. Her son and daughter both disliked their long hair and hated being asked about it all the time. I really felt for them -- and quite frankly was surprised they hadn't at some point taken a pair of scissors to it themselves! Lots of kids do it no matter the length. Eventually this mom shaved her own head in solace with a friend who was battling cancer, and at that time allow her kids to choose their own styles.
I'm sure David Beckham has the best of intentions, but my thoughts on kids hair falls along the lines of their hair is part of their body and they ought to be in charge of it. Maybe not just yet at age 4, but if little Harper some day soon has a strong opinion on going short I hope he'll listen.
