posted in CelebritiesIn light of Bristol Palin's second pregnancy out of wedlock her mother, Sarah Palin, has a few words to finally share publicly.
"Bristol is pregnant again," CBS correspondent Tracy Smith noted during an interview with the former Governor which took place on Sunday, during which she put Sarah in the hot seat. "That can’t be how you saw this playing out, unmarried and pregnant again."
"Heck, no!" the 51-year-old candidly replied. "Being a single mom is . . . oh my goodness. My heart goes out to the single parents, but my enormous admiration for what they’re able to accomplish doing double duty. And I watch Bristol do double duty all the time with her little boy, Tripp."
Tracy Smith tried to push the issue a bit further, saying, "There are those who say, ‘Come on, this goes against everything you stand for.'"
To which Sarah responded, "Well, the cool thing about putting your faith in God...is he certainly is a God of second chances and third and fourth and fifth chances."
Referring to Bristol's current pregnancy Sarah went on to say, "I can’t wait for about 45 more days and I’m going to have a little baby granddaughter...And I'm happy about it."
And, somewhat surprisingly, I find myself feeling happy that she's happy about it.
In case you haven't followed along over the years, I've never agreed with the Palin's abstinence-only education stance -- not by a long shot. Which, for better or worse, has made Bristol's unfolding pregnancies interesting for me to comment upon. I've been mightily tempted to point a finger and laugh about that approach not working (and perhaps am guilty of having done so a bit), but I've also been challenged to think past that obvious point.
What happens when someone who doesn't believe in sex before marriage does get pregnant out of wedlock -- twice? What do I think and how do I react then?
I've been mulling it over since news of Bristol's second pregnancy went public, and I think the answer is that I skip over gloating about being right and stay true to what I think is best. Sex ed (not of the abstinence-only variety) is extremely important for young people. Beyond that I simply take a breath and find a place in my heart for compassion for the Palin family.
Things have a way of happening. Things you don't plan on, things you never imagined would come to pass. As a fellow human I know this all too well, and in that frame of mind I'm able to appreciate the way Sarah Palin is supporting her daughter. Let it be known once and for all I don't agree with their approach, but I also do see a family that is standing by their members no matter what -- and that I can get onboard with.
