posted in CelebritiesIt’s no secret that when you become a mom your entire life changes in the blink of an eye. For Supermodel and entrepreneur Tyra Banks motherhood has meant giving up a lot.
The new mom told E! News she’s given up driving since she and boyfriend Erik Alsa welcomed their son York via gestational surrogate in January.
"Some mornings you wake up, and you're like, 'Where am I? I don't know what's going on. And I know it's not a good idea for me to drive right now because I did not sleep,'" she said.
She went on to say that the couple shares parenting responsibilities and has worked out a routine that works for them.
"So I balance that and his dad helps, and we go back and forth so that's good. Erik does about 40 per cent diaper duty at night. So we're almost 50-50," she told E! News.
I can certainly relate to her situation in some ways. There is a long list of things we often give up when we become parents. Here are a few common things some moms sacrifice, including me.
Sleep. I can’t remember the last time I had a good night sleep. Even though our 5-year-old and 2-year-old sleep through the night, they’re usually up at the crack of dawn vying for our attention.
Hygiene. There’ve been times when I’d get so wrapped up with taking care of the kids and everything else around the house that I’d go the entire day without taking a shower. I’ve also been guilty of neglecting to wash my hair for weeks at a time.
Beauty routine. I’m sure you’ve heard about parents wearing pajamas while dropping their kids off at school. Well, that’s me - guilty as charged. Prior to having kids, I'd spend an extra 10 minutes applying makeup before heading to an event. But these days I’m usually short on time, so getting dolled up is usually out of the question. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve been at a salon to have my hair done!
Alone time. Once you pop those babies out, private time becomes a rare occasion. My husband and I have had to do some serious undercover work just to be alone.
When it comes to having “me time” I usually have to sneak off into the bathroom. But sadly, sitting on the toilet and taking a shower no longer provide an escape. It doesn’t take long for one of the kids to barge in demanding my attention.
Despite giving up a lot, I’m sure we can agree that it’s all worth it. It's all about finding a balance that works for you and your family.
Tyra continues to work towards achieving that, and if that means not getting behind the wheel, so be it.
“I'm understanding delegation, understanding that I don't have to do everything to make something successful,” she said.
She’s definitely got the right idea because when it comes to raising kids, it also takes a village. Hey, if I could avoid driving to get some shut eye, I'd probably do that too. Unfortunately, I don't have that luxury.
