Pregnant with baby #2, Kim Kardashian hasn't been shy about sharing her morning sickness woes. Last month, though, she took to social media to inform her millions of fans and followers that she'd stumbled upon a cure.
“OMG. Have you heard about this? As you guys know my #morningsickness has been pretty bad. I tried changing things about my lifestyle, like my diet, but nothing helped, so I talked to my doctor. He prescribed me #Diclegis, and I felt a lot better and most importantly, it's been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby," Kim wrote alongside a selfie - of course - of her holding up a bottle of Diclegis. "I’m so excited and happy with my results that I'm partnering with Duchesnay USA to raise awareness about treating morning sickness. If you have morning sickness, be safe and [be] sure to ask your doctor about the pill with the pregnant woman on it and find out more...”
Some of her followers were grateful for the tip - "I'm glad you feel better & it's so sweet that you're making the effort to raise awareness," wrote one. Others, like the FDA, weren't quite so enthusiastic.
On Friday, the FDA made public a letter of warning that it issued to Duchesnay, Inc, the maker of the morning sickness drug, asking it to “immediately cease misbranding.”
Taking aim at Kim's recent post, the letter reads, “By omitting the risks associated with Diclegis, the social media post misleadingly fails to provide material information about the consequences that may result from the use of the drug and suggests that it is safer than has been demonstrated.”
While Diclegis has been approved in the USA, its possible side effects include sleepiness or drowsiness, dizziness, stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, headache, and trouble sleeping. The FDA also notes that it hasn't been tested on expectant moms suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, an extreme form of morning sickness.
While Kim has since removed the post touting the drug from her Instagram, she hasn't commented on the FDA warning.
The controversy hasn't dampened the reality star's love of a good selfie, though: On Monday, Kim, who is 5 months into her pregnancy, posted a completely nude pic, writing, "First they say I'm too skinny so I have to be faking it...Now they say I'm too big so I have to be faking it...SMH!"
