A word of warning: If you happen to run into Zooey Deschanel, steer the conversation well clear of anything to do with pregnancy, babies or child-rearing.
In an interview with In Style magazine's August issue, the 34-year-old New Girl star, who split from her husband, Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard, in 2012, says she's had it up to here with all of the questions about her reproductive plans.
"When I was married, that was the first thing people wanted to know. Like every woman is dying to give birth! I don't think so. Nobody asks a guy that. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, 'Pregnant and Alone!' Stuck in this 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. That's not something that defines me at all.'"
I feel for famous folks like Zooey who seem to live under a cloud of constant pregnancy speculation. It's frustrating enough facing that from your mother-in-law, never mind thousands of strangers.
In general, I think it's pretty poor etiquette to pester someone - man or woman - about their baby-making plans. These days the "baby in the baby carriage" doesn't necessarily follow love and marriage. And while for some of us all of the well-meaning questions are just a minor nuisance, they must be dreadful for couples who are having a hard time conceiving.
Were/are you often asked about your pregnancy plans?
These celebrities are happily child-free, too...
