4 top baby sleep tips from a celebrity super-nanny

What do Gwyneth Paltrow and Minnie Driver have in common?

Both are celebrities, of course. Both are mothers. Minnie dated Matt Damon while Gwyneth dated Ben Affleck (remember that?). There's something else that ties these two actresses, though: They both shared the same elite British nanny.

Gwyneth and Minnie are two of the very high profile names on nanny Rachel Waddilove's client list, and both are huge fans.

“When I was a brand new mother, I was overwhelmed!" Minnie, mom to son Henry, writes in a testimonial to her former nanny's services. "Rachel has a calmness, and knowledge about babies and children, that not only helped me soothe and ease the journey for me son, but also for me! Her tips and advice are invaluable.”

Gwyneth, who has kids Apple and Moses, gushes, "Rachel’s advice on everything from breastfeeding to parenting was invaluable."

As most parents will attest, one of the biggest challenges after bringing home a baby is figuring out how to get her to go to sleep - and to stay that way for longer than 10 minutes!

Rachel, who has over 40 years experience as a "maternity nurse, child-care expert, baby sleep expert, parental adviser and author," is now sharing some of her baby sleep advice with the masses. Take a look at the four top tips she shared with US Magazine.

Sounds like some solid advice - but not exactly groundbreaking. Still, it does offer up a very good reminder.

I'm no expert, but I'd probably add one caveat to Rachel's list: Some babies just aren't great sleepers. Period.

I have two kids: The first was sleeping through the night (or "STTN" in BabyCenter speak) by eight weeks old. I credited this to the fact that I'd established a very firm sleep routine; I topped her up with a bottle and swaddled her before bed; she had a lovey, a white noise machine, a black-out blind. Check, check, check! I did everything just as I was supposed to, and it worked.

I stuck to the same pattern with my second baby. Check, check, check! She didn't sleep through the night until she was two years old. In my admittedly limited experience, even if you religiously follow all of the best advice, it may still take a while to reach that holy grail of milestones.

Just know that it's not necessarily your fault - it's not necessarily something you should be doing but aren't, or something you are doing but should stop - and you will get there eventually. My once poor sleeper is now five years old and rarely makes a peep at night.

How long did it take your baby to "STTN?"

Jennifer Garner gets candid about Ben Affleck (& the nanny)

Just over six months after shocking fans with news of their plans to split, Jennifer Garner has opened up about her evolving relationship with Ben Affleck. Interestingly, it's not only vague, carefully crafted statements from the mother of three -- she opened up to Vanity Fair about their love, the nanny and their future as co-parents. Take a look...

Jennifer Garner on marrying Ben Affleck in 2005: “I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him. And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again. You can’t have these three babies and so much of what we had. He’s the love of my life. What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

On now having two failed marriages: “It’s one of the pains in my life that something I believe in so strongly I’ve completely failed at twice. You have to have two people to dance a marriage. My heart’s a little on the tender side right now, and it’s always easier to focus on the ways that you feel hurt, but I know that, with time and some perspective, I’ll have a clearer sense of where I let the system down, because there’s no way I get off in this.”

Jennifer Garner interview

On the scandal involving Ben and their nanny: “Let me just tell you something. We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation. Bad judgment? Yes. It’s not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives… I have had to have conversations about the meaning of ‘scandal.’”

On co-parenting in peace: “It’s not Ben’s job to make me happy. The main thing is these kids—and we’re completely in line with what we hope for them. Sure, I lost the dream of dancing with my husband at my daughter’s wedding. But you should see their faces when he walks through the door. And if you see your kids love someone so purely and wholly, then you’re going to be friends with that person.”

On dating in the future: “I guess. I don’t know. It’s just that [from] everyone that I know that is dating it just seems, well…. Men don’t call anymore…. I want flowers; I don’t want to text. What does that make me? What kind of dinosaur am I?”

I would never expect Jennifer Garner or any other person (of any degree of fame) to feel as though they owed the world a look at what went wrong in their relationship, but I also can't deny I was quite interested to read her interview. It's not our business, but it's still natural to be curious what went wrong!

I wholeheartedly agree with her line about it's not one spouse's responsibility to make the other person happy, and I applaud her taking ownership of the part she played. No one, aside from Jennifer and Ben, will ever really know who exactly did and didn't do what, but it sounds to me like she's keeping perspective and is truly looking out for her kids' interest.

Seems strange to say this is a great divorce interview, because the situation is still a bit sad on the whole, but sometimes life happens. Best of luck to the Garner-Afflecks as they sort out what their futures will look like!

Have you been through a split before? What advice would you offer Jen and Ben?

Jillian Michaels has some highly unusual rules for bad words

by

Jillian Michaels and I seem to both agree that words only have as much power as you give them, but our take on who should be allowed to cures diverges after that.

The Just Jillian star, who is raising 5-year-old Lukensia and 3-year-old Phoenix with partner Heidi Rhoades, recently clarified her stance on bad words by telling E! News her kids are "not allowed to say shut up, they're not allowed to say God damn it, they're not allowed to call names. But they can say anything else inside the house to me."

Jillian Michaels kids Heidi

"So they can say like, ‘I'm really f—king upset right now!' to me. ‘I don't want to take a f—king nap! This food tastes like s—t!' They're allowed to say all that to me because it doesn't offend me," she went on to say. "I'm trying to explain to them some people are offended, some people aren't.

"There are consequences if you use the words. You're young. You won't be able to go and play at so and so's house. You're going to get in trouble at school. But if you want to use it around me, you're welcome to."

Admitting part of her reasoning for allowing the cursing is she uses the "bad" words herself, Jillian Michaels added, "I try not to be hypocritical in my parenting…I want them to feel like I'm not being hypocritical."

I always find the conversation surrounding language to be an interesting one, because often the lines we draw are so different. In our house my husband and I use any words we feel like, but it's been made very clear to our sons they'll only be able to do the same when they're adults -- no sooner. I suppose that makes us hypocrites, but we just don't care.

Despite my own use of four-letter words I've discovered over the years I'm actually quite prudish when it comes to the way my kids speak. One of my boys even had a teacher who said "crap" and "shut up" were allowed in her classroom! I was shocked, and quickly clarified to my sons those words still aren't approved for kids in our family to use, either at home or in school.

Where do you draw the line on bad words? Are you hypocritical about it?

Photo: Naya Rivera steps out in lopsided, new mom glory

If you noticed anything unusual about Naya Rivera's latest public appearance, you're not alone. The new mom herself knows full well she was a little "lopsided" at the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood party on Tuesday, February 23.

Take a look at the mother of 5-month-old Josey, in a white, plunging gown:

Naya Rivera lopsided breastfeeding

Posting a similar photo to Instagram, Naya Rivera wrote, "Absolutely loved this @TadashiShoji look tonight for the @VanityFair young Hollywood party! Shout out to my son for the lopsided boobs. LOL #breastfeeding #momlife He is SO worth it."

In a blog post for People published in December the former Glee star opened up about the early days of her breastfeeding journey, writing:

Breastfeeding is like finding out that all of a sudden you can get bacon from your elbow.

Really, it’s a trip.

One minute there’s nothing going on with your perfectly perky boobs and the next a nurse is rolling yellow stuff out of your nipple and putting it in your baby’s mouth. Things like achieving a proper latch, combating engorgement, and practicing different holds soon became my sole priorities. Our bedroom became a haven for all things breast; breast pads, shields, pumps and creams.

At times I started to feel like I was only a tit to Josey and there was many a time I would walk in the door to a crying baby and immediately have to strip and feed.

She went on to add it "wasn’t all bad though, the bond between a mother and baby when you’re breastfeeding is incredible and something no one else shares with your baby."

Two months later it's apparent Naya is still committed to breastfeeding, and I have to say I'm impressed by the way she owned her lopsidedness loud and proud! How unusual to see a celebrity mom wear something so daring while knowing they aren't the typical picture of expected perfection.

I, too, remember being lopsided a few times while breastfeeding, but as best I can recall it was in the early days of nursing when my milk was first coming in. Specifically, I remember being freaked out by how rock-hard one breast was compared to the other, which my son had just fed from.

I can't say I remember being lopsided months into breastfeeding, but I imagine it's yet another one of those things where every person's body grows, shows and reacts differently.

Did you experience being lopsided while breastfeeding? What do you think of Naya showing off her nursing mom cleavage?

Pregnant Chrissy Tiegen defends decision to pick a girl embryo

by

Carolyn Robertson

posted in Celebrities

Expectant parents Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend revealed in December that the baby on the way is a little girl, but it turns out the big news didn't come as a surprise.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the model mom-to-be, who conceived via in vitro fertilization, reveals that she specifically chose a female embryo.

“I’ve made this decision. Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.'" she reveals. “I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. It excited me to see... just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond."

It didn't take long for the online backlash to begin, with some criticizing the couple for, in the words of one online commenter, “messing with the natural blessing from God.”

Chrissy seems genuinely surprised by all of the criticism, but as always the outspoken celebrity has been quick to fire back, taking to Twitter to respond, "My natural blessing from god was infertility."

That's not all she had to say.

"What year is this!? And for the record, I am always happy and open to speak on infertility. The more casual, the better! I don't mind," she Tweeted. When someone remarked that it was "sad" that they would prefer one gender over another, Chrissy replied, "what is that difference though? I've already created embryos with a doctor. only after must it be random?"

My personal favorite of Chrissy's Tweets, though, was this one: "I also picked the embryo with a taste for bacon, a knack for magic and size 7 feet so she can always find shoes."

At least her sense of humor is still intact.

It's an interesting debate. While the traditional side of me leans toward letting nature run its course, I can certainly see Chrissy's point. She had to intervene with the so-called "natural" process just to get pregnant after trying for years to conceive without luck. That meant she had an opportunity to decide on a boy or a girl, so she went ahead and did just that.

Trying for one gender over another is nothing new. Women attempt to time conception to certain points in their cycles and try out old wives tales for that very reason. Heck, there's even an app for it. Chrissy took it one step further to guarantee a girl, but is it really that much different?

In any case, she's quick to point out that just because they chose a girl this time doesn't mean they've ruled out a baby boy all together.

"A boy will come along. We'll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick," she says, noting that they have "a few more [embryos] on ice."

What do you think of Chrissy and John's revelation?
