John Krasinski couldn't wait for his wife, Emily Blunt, to give birth to their daughter, but since becoming a dad the actor says he's been through a bit of an "existential crisis."
"I went through some really serious stuff," the father of Hazel, who'll celebrate her second birthday next month, told People. "There is a mirror that is held up to me now. You have someone watching you. You have to lead by example. I'm focused on becoming a better person every single day."
Along with fatherhood affecting him personally, John says becoming a dad changed his relationships with the rest of his family.
"I got to understand my parents better. I got to understand my wife better," the 36-year-old went on to say. "I got to understand how lucky I am to be in the fox hole with someone I can rely on 150 percent."
Emily Blunt, who is currently filming The Girl On the Train, also has spoken about how becoming a first-time parent has changed her.
"Everything has slowed down," the actress told Harper's Bazaar. "You realize that nothing else really matters. This industry, this town especially (Los Angeles), can make you feel that all that stuff matters; this rather transient world and the gush and the work and the success and the competition.
"You can get drawn into that bubble, of thinking it all matters. Having a baby has made me realize that it doesn’t. None of it. It really doesn’t.”
Isn't it interesting how, at least from this pair of quotes, it seems parenthood threw John for a loop but clarified things for Emily?
Unfortunately, my own experience was closer to his than hers. I wonder sometimes, if I'd had a career going before kids that I returned to after a maternity leave (not trying to imply that's easy to do!), if I would have felt less lost. There would have been some consistency in my pre and post-motherhood life.
As it happened, I was pregnant with our first through a serious transition time. My husband finished his degree, I left my job at the college and we moved to a new city. Frankly, there wasn't much for me to do besides be pregnant, and then later be a mom. I didn't have a job, any friends or even a favorite old restaurant -- everything was new and I was pretty darn lost.
Eventually I got my feet under me and established a bit of a life, but for awhile there I had no idea who I was or what the heck I was supposed to do with myself and this little baby thing we'd created.
